Mark Grgurich was killed today by a hit and run driver in Norwalk. Anyone know him? God be with Mark's family and haunt the driver for life.

A tragedy, to be sure. You gotta wonder about the coward who could not be adult enough to acknowledge what he or she did. I hope someone finks on them, though, and soon; and then I trust the legal system in Iowa will do its job properly.
Points out one thing; however. It's not the cars themselves that are the problem here, it's the idiots and the assh¤les driving them.
Ride on, Mark. May you have smooth roads, tailwinds, and NO JERKS IN CARS when you reach your final destination.

We had a bike rider killed here in Spencer 12 days ago.
http://spencerdailyreporter.com/story/1563100.html
This was an experienced biker who has ridden ragbrai and multiple local rides. He rode his bike to work daily. Unfortunately part of the route was on a 4 lane road with 65 mph speed limit. He was hit by a young man driving a work van about 15 minutes before sunrise. The story above tells it all. The kid said he just did not see the biker.
I know some people don't like mirrors but my mirror saved my life this year. I was on a benefit ride and saw a car from behind in my mirror. It kept coming and when I knew the driver wasn't getting over, I bailed onto the gravel shoulder. The car never did get over and missed me by about three feet.
I wonder if some of these fatalities could be prevented by this one safety device on our bikes. With all of the people on cell phones and texting, we bikers need to really watch out.
The above was a horrible tragedy for everyone involved and our community really misses Mark. |

Another tragic incident...you really want to get your blood boiling, go read the posts that are attached to the story in the DMR.
A lot of knuckleheads...blaming the biker...claiming if he would have been riding one of the trails that were "meant for bikes to be on instead of the road"....it wouldn't have happened.
Some others telling people to go sign the "get bikes off the road" petition to prevent this from happening in the future...

One other thing...here's the Missouri legislature in fine form:
They just passed a law preventing drivers from texting while driving...
Sounds good, right....WRONG - it only covers drivers who are under the age of 21...are you kidding me?
Sound judgement because drivers who are over 21 are responsible...
Sends a great message, right? "Just wait until you're 21 and then you can text while you drive...it'll be okay because that means you have your sh*t together and you can text, read a newspaper, put on your makeup or do whatever you want"... _________________ Ride Hard, Party Harder! |

Mark was a long time friend of mine. The truck was said to be swerving and speeding at the time of the murder. That's right I'll say he murdered Mark. It's Involuntary Manslaughter at the very least.
He was one of the nicest people you could have ever met. Those of us who knew him will miss his smiling face and uplifting laughter.

Jail the rat bastard for a long time and then deny him driving privileges for life. Yes I am mad.

New poll on KCCI - cyclists need to vote
(posted 8/31/2009) View all News Items
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
A group is promoting a plan to ban bicycles from rural roads. Do you agree with the idea?
As you guessed, there are more road-raged motorists voting than cyclists, but I think we can change that.

Sure hope so. I was beginning to think that the person may have been from out of the area, perhaps even out of state, and was going to get away with this.

A photo of a "truck of truck of interest"
Older chevy or GMC, roll bar and off road lights not a ladder rack.
Im sure the sob has been hiding it in his garage but someone must recognize it, $15,000 in reward offered, greed has to kick in and override loyalty soon.

Looks like they are close to an arrest. The police inpounded a white pickup last night. Guess where the pickup was from? .....Winterset! Yes that is the area where the cyclist was run over by the farm trailer and the driver fled the scene. What the heck is going on?
I remember there was talk just before Ragbrai about venturing off route and making a silent ride around the Winterset courthouse because the sheriff wouldn't press charges. Did that venture ever happen?
I hope they nail this guy in the white truck. |

I am surprised — although pleased — that no one has rushed to name a suspect yet. While it will probably turn out to be the owner of the vehicle itself, throwing a name out there prematurely and allowing him/her to be pilloried in the press could end up prejudicing any potential jurors — assuming that this will go to trial.
OTOH, if this is the general mindset of the people in and around Winterset and Madison County — the cyclist as roadkill — maybe tainting the potential jury pool in that area wouldn't be the worst idea. Obtaining a change of venue, or bringing in a jury from outside the area, would be time-consuming and expensive, but might result in a more fair judgment.
