I rode yesterday, the weather was great and the road - not to busy. Every time a car did pass me, I got nervous. Every car got way over and most of them even slowed down. No reason to be nervous but I kept thinking about the bikers who have been hit. I don't want to be afraid of riding but I think I was yesterday. Anyone else feel this way? I cut my ride short because I just wasn't feeling it.
Next Saturday I am doing a triathlon - just the bike part, with 2 friends. Hopefully I won't be in the same frame of mind. _________________ Some days, it's tough to be the Princess! |

Amanda,
You will do fantasic on your part of the triathalon - because you can. That's the important part - you can.
With the recent accidents/deaths/contraversies over bicycle versus cars, I've tried to be more aware of who/what is around me, and I still feel the majority of drivers do try to be careful when they see a bike. I am discouraged by the number of drivers that pull up to a stop sign/red light with no intention of stopping (until they see oncoming traffic), but on my recent rides around the Des Moines area, most cars will give me room when they pass.
The thought heaviest on my mind is why is there such a division in society today? It's not just bike vs. cars, it is Republican vs. Democrats, it is money vs. no money; it is "THEM VS/ US". How did we get here? How do we change?
But back to the topic - CONGRATULATIONS on doing the triathalon!!!
I know you will be fantastic, and am proud that you are doing it!!! _________________ Missing Skeeter

| While I wish Amanda the best of luck I must say that I am not thrilled about the change in this thread. It seemed kind of important. I do apreciate how Amanda segwayed between "the incident" and "her feelings." and honestly think is sucks that such accidents do penatrate our thoughts while riding. It has happened to me as well. |

Getting back to the topic of this post, has the person of interest been identified yet? Why would someone leave the scene of an accident? Under the influence, scared or what? _________________ Some days, it's tough to be the Princess! |

Waiting eagerly for further developments. I'm sure the 'BikeIowa' forum will have the info available soon after it is released.

Well, here it is Wednesday and nothing reported, either here or on the 'BikeIowa' forum.
Did something get announced and we just haven't picked up on it yet? Or was the announcement a 'non-announcement' on the order of "We are still involved in the investigation and have nothing to release at this time"?

Police: Car-bicycle crash in Des Moines was not an accident
REGISTER STAFF REPORT • September 9, 2009
A car-bicycle crash Tuesday was a case of domestic assault by vehicle, according to Des Moines police.
Investigators said Arthur Robinson, 21, of Des Moines, was hit by a car at East 23rd Street and Logan Avenue about 12:40 a.m.
The suspect's name was not released. There were no arrests.
Police said Robinson was riding south on East 23rd Street when he was hit by the car, which was heading west on Logan. The driver of the car had not turned on the headlights, according to a report.
Robinson was taken to Iowa Lutheran Hospital by fire department medics where he was treated for a broken wrist and other injuries. Officers could not immediately locate the driver. |

It would certainly be appropriate for Mark's friends to set up a ghost bike in memory of Mark Grgurich and would serve as a reminder for those traveling G14. It appears some of those driving G14 need constant reminders that there are bikes on the road.

There may yet be a ghost bike placed, but the location is not good for one. It's someones yard ditch and no place to chain one up. Maybe just down the road a bit. I will check it again in the next few days to see if someone has placed one close.
I drove the road last Saturday and it's a wide open area. Just at the rise in the road. _________________ Note: the above post is an opinion & not a fact. In fact in might be a lie, but that's just my opinion & that's a fact in my opinion. |

Just saw the posting on BikeIowa and the guy turned himself in. It's an 80 year old man. There weren't very many more details. It's so very sad for all involved! _________________ TEAM GOLD BOND - It's a party in your pants!! |
