No offense but it's McKinney that is being charged with Mark's death.

Ok, changed it, I wonder where I got that mispelling from. Don;t want to accuse an innocent man if there is one named McKinley.

LINN COUNTY - The Linn County Sheriff's Department is searching for a white pick-up truck they believe hit a bicyclist Thursday evening.

It happened on County Home Road near Whittier just before 7:00 p.m..

Deputies found Jospeh Richey, 27, of Marion in the ditch.

Richey, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to St. Luke's Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Although he didn't see the vehicle, witnesses reported seeing a white truck with a utility box in the area at the time.

If you have any information, please contact the Linn County Sheriff's Office at (319) 892-6100

There are just too damn many of the these accidents. Are there more of the occuring or are we just more sensitive and aware of them? I know there will always be accidents and it is foolish to always blame the motorist without first hand knowledge of the situation, but it seems to me that these car/bike accident are too frequent.

I hope the lastest injured rider has a speedy recovery.

A Tall Dog got clipped last night in/near Ames.
"I'm OK, but my little finger still throbs. This 18 yr old kid was spacing off and nearly KILLED me!!! Luckily all that happened was... I broke his mirror with my finger and handlebar. How fast do you have to go break a mirror off your car by hitting a bicycle. At least he stopped!!! I kept my bike upright, I don't know how. The bike shop gave my ride a clean bill of health (no real damage)."

It wasn't me this time, a guy I ride with on the Wed. night ride.
Last time i was hit was about a week ago while walking across campus. Heard the tire rub and must have started to look to the left. One gal on a mountain bike went by and her friend hit my left hand. Somehow I caught her handlebar and held on and neither one of us went down.

I ride the stretch of road often that the latest hit and run occurred on. It's got some rollers that could make visibility difficult. Also, at 7pm, the sun might have played a factor. BUT...there is tons of bike traffic on this road so most locals know to beware. A guy I work with got clipped by an older farmer last year on this same stretch. Luckily, he wasn't hurt. I think this is becoming an epidemic!!

Ride safe this weekend everyone!!

Another story today that the DOT may, if the get the accident report soon, make him come in for re-evaluation to see if he can keep his license, which expires in oct. of this year.
A hit and run last night in DM involved a motorcycle, they caught that 26 year old dirtdag who killed him already. 10 years ago he shot a cop, twice. They shot him back and he never went to trial, "incompatent" from his injuries. Not so bad however that he couldn't drive, steal $26 of gas from a Casey's, then run down a guy on a motorcycle. It will be interesting to see what kind of traffic charges they file in this.

Such an action seems very logical to me. While he is probably fine to drive based on DOT testing, it never hurts to retest. Such re-testing seems like a good idea for anyone who accumulate x-number of moving violation points or is involved in an injury acident.

DES MOINES, Iowa A Des Moines woman was charged Monday in a deadly hit-and-run crash over the weekend.

Investigators charged Angela Arellano, 36, with one count of vehicular homicide and one count of serious injury by vehicle. Police said Arellano turned herself in to investigators Monday morning.

She is being held in the Polk County Jail on $80,000 bond.

Three teenagers were hit late Saturday.

Reading the comments about this one, the motorcycleist, and the biker is pretty disturbing. A lot think it was the bikers fault even though he was run down from behind. the guys who hit the motorcycle have hispanic names and people really focused on that,. In the saturday night case the 3 teens are African-American, guess who a lot of the posters blame.
I guess maybe it's okay to hate anyone different than you Sad When you get behind the wheel of a car it ain't no video gamethose are real sons, brothers, fathers and they are not coming back with the poke of a restart buttom.

The front page of the DesMoines Register had a big story on driver safety in the elderly. They had a mug shot of Jud McKinney and discussed the car bike fatality, but failed to say it was a hit and run. They said he will be arraigned tomorrow. Not sure what the charge will be.

Can't be there (at the arraignment) in person — for which the county should be grateful; see my post here — but be assured I will be paying attention to see what comes of this.

JERK!

By Sara Sleyster
October 12, 2009

The man suspected of hitting and killing a bicyclist near Cumming this
summer avoided a scheduled court appearance this morning by filing a written plea
last week.

Paul L. McKinney, 79, of Winterset entered a written plea of not guilty to
the charges of hit and run and obstructing prosecution. He also waived his
right to a speedy trial.

McKinney is accused of driving the truck that hit and killed bicyclist Mark
Grgurich on Aug. 30 in Warren County. He was also charged with failure to
maintain control following the incident.

A pretrial hearing was set for 9:30 a.m. Nov. 17 at the Warren County
courthouse. The trial was scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Dec. 3.

SUGGESTION:
Everyone who thinks that McKinney should be in court rather than stalling and postponing everything, go to the DMRegister site, log in, and post comments. Let's flood those boards with pro-bike comments. I already have, and for the record, I use a different handle/email on those boards. And no, it's not FMC!

Just keep your comments civil and to the point. Refrain from ad hominem attacks on other posters. And for Pete's sake, USE YOUR SPELLCHECK!! The less literate and educated we appear, the less impact our messages will have.

Perhaps if the anti-cyclist troglodytes see that there are more and more people who ride bikes, we are from all walks of life and not just 'tree-hugging anti-car pinko liberals' (yes, I've been called that and I almost laughed my arse off!), and we are their friends, neighbors, and co-workers, we just might open some minds and help start some meaningful dialogue.
